Waterfall of St. Wolfgang
Waterfall of St. Wolfgang is one of the most charming corners of the surroundings of Vyšší Brod and across Lipno Region. The cascade waterfall is made up by the small river of Menší Vltavice near the Vyšší Brod monastery and can be accessed via a nature trail called Opatská stezka I.
St. Wolfgang was a bishop of Regensburg who lived in the 10th century. He excelled in virtues as well as by managing the diocese in a wise manner. St. Wolfgang is the patron of Bavaria and Regensburg, as well as shepherds, sculptors, boatmen, loggers, carpenters and those guiltlessly captured and imprisoned.
Visitors can access the waterfall when taking the nature trail called Opatská stezka I. the starting point of which is the recently restored Rožmberk Gateway of the Vyšší Brod monastery. Afterwards, you need to take the yellow-marked trail which leads you back to the monastery after three kilometres. The route is 3.7 km long.
The shape of the trail copies the contour of digit “8” and returns to the monastery. The information panels teach the visitor about the art of old stonemasons or the canal of Opatský kanál; the pilgrim may also have a drink from what is said to be a healing well to which a steep path turns upward; at the furthest point of the trail you can see the waterfall of St. Wolfgang.
